    By the autoradiographic techniques using 3H-deoxycytidine (3HdCyd)and 3H-thymidine (3HdThd), the patterns of labeling of plasma cells and pyroninophilic blast cells (immunoblasts), which are proliferating in response to antigenic stimulation, were studied in comparison with the labeling patterns of germinal-center cells.
    The majority of plasma cells and immunoblasts were much more heavily labeled with 3HdThd than were the germinal-center cells. On the contrary, the ability to utilize 3HdCyd of the former two cell types was definitely inferior to that of the latter cell type. However, either plasma cells or immunoblasts were intermingled with a smaller number of cells which were as intensely labeled with 3HdCyd as were the germinal-center cells. Such cells are most likely the progenitors of plasma cells or immunoblasts.

    The distribution of hen egg white lysozyme (LZM) in domestic fowl tissues and blood cells was determined by use of the direct antibody techniques both immuno-fluorescent and -enzyme (horseradish peroxidase) labeled methods. Immunospecific LZM reaction was found in the serous tubular gland cells of oviductus proprius (magnum), the proximal tubules of the kidney, intestinal epithelium, Lieberkuhn's gland, and macrophages in the lung, spleen and lamina propria of the digestive tract. In addition, LZM was also found in the myeloperoxidase-less pseudoeosinophilic leukocytes (heterophils) monocytes and myelocytes of blood peripheral and marrow smears. This distribution of LZM is discussed in relation to its possible physiological role in avian tissues and cells and particularly to its known antibacterial functions. Results of experiments with the blood cell LZM support the hypothesis that avian LZM is capable of being used as“marker”enzyme in the differentiation and maturation of granulocytes and monocytes.

    The oral cavity base and inferior surface of the tongue excised from 5 male and 5 female adult Wistar-strain rats and 6 male and 4 female adult SMAstrain mice were observed by scanning and light microscopy. The following results were obtained.
    1. The caruncula sublingualis of the oral cavity base of the rat displayed several eminences, taste-bud papillae, which generally possessed 1 to 4 taste buds in each tip. A pair of excretory ducts from the sublingual glands opened on the posterior part of the carunculae, and ducts from the submaxillary glands penetrated the centers of the carunuculae.2. Taste-bud papillae were observed rarely in the oral cavity base of the rat apart from the carunculae. These taste-bud papillae resembled fungiform papillae in shape, except for having 1 to 3 taste buds and no epithelial mantle.3. Filiform and fungiform papillae were scattered only over the tip and marginal part of the inferior surface of the tongue. The other parts of the inferior surface were covered with thick and cornified mucous epithelial cells, and low wave-like eminences were present there. It is suggested that the microridges of the cell surface represent a structure adapted for the mastication of ingested substances.4. In the oral cavity base of the mouse, taste-bud papillae appeared only in the carunuculae. The number of taste buds was fewer than that in the rat.5. The taste buds in the carunculae of the rat and mouse were distributed around the orifices of the excretory ducts of the salivary glands. This suggests that saliva released from orifices near the taste buds may strengthen the activation of the taste receptors to perceive taste quickly.

    Strain-differences between C3H and C57BL mice were studied in prolactin (LTH) cells of the anterior pituitary of diestrus females by morphometric techniques with an electron microscope.
    The population of L TH-cells was higher in C3H. The size of the LTH-cells was larger in C3H, but the nucleus showed no significant difference in size. The area of secretory granules was markedly larger in C3H, not only absolutely but also relatively compared to the area of the cytoplasm, although the spaces occupied by the Golgi apparatus and rough endoplasmic reticulum showed no strain-differences. The mitochondrial area was absolutely but not relatively larger in C3H. The lysosomal area and number of exocytotic figures of secretory granules were not significantly different between the C3H and C57BL strains.
    The above results suggest that the secretory activity of prolactin cells of the anterior pituitary may be higher in C3H than in C57BL strain mice.
